Which Rechargeable Battery Should I Choose?
If your device accepts batteries, they can be replaced with NiMH rechargeable cells.
Nickel-metal Hydride Vs Nickel Cadmium
The most ecological rechargeable batteries are NiMH rechargeable units (Nickel-metal hydride). They do not contain the most dangerous heavy metals so are more environmentally friendly than NiCad (Nickel Cadmium). NiMH batteries also have a higher capacity, meaning they can produce more power from a similar sized cell.
One advantage NiCad rechargeable batteries have over NiMH is their incredible lifespan. While NiMH batteries can be charged up to 500 times, NiCad can be charged up to 1000 times.
However, NiCad batteries contain cadmium, a known human carcinogen and a metal the EU is currently attempting to phase out in batteries. Therefore, if NiCad batteries are purchased they should be recycled and disposed of with extreme care.
The Hybrio
New batteries such as the new Uniross Hybrio also counter some of the traditional problems posed by rechargeable batteries. This is the first Hybrid battery that is ready to use instantly, but can also be recharged and used again and again.
The Hybrio combines the benefits of the rechargeable, such as having the ability to be charged up to 500 times with the added capability of having a far slower rate of self discharge. Unlike some rechargeable batteries that can loose up to 1% charge per day Hybrio retain charge even after 6 or even 12 months of storage eliminating the need to re-charge before use
