The disposal of batteries as normal
waste can cause a damaging effect to the environment. So far Britain
lags far behind the rest of Europe in terms of the amount of batteries
which are recycled. Portable battery collection rates by percentage
of sales in 2002 was as follows: |
| |
|
|
Belgium |
59% |
| |
|
|
Sweden |
55% |
| |
|
|
Holland |
44% |
| |
|
|
Germany |
39% |
| |
|
|
Britain |
0.5% |
| |
However, under a new British Battery
Directive this rate will be raised to 25% recycling of household batteries
by 2012. More sites and collection schemes are being established all
around the country to help this target to become a reality. By 2008
retailers will also have to set up boxes for old batteries. |
